Tales From The Sun

Audio Sample: Wastin’ My Time

If you’ve ever invested considerable time and emotion in trying to either open or change someone’s mind and found it futile, you completely understand this song.  I had too many people in my life trying to tell me who, what, where and how I should be, think and act.  My attempts to get them to leave me alone by pointing out that what was right for them was not automatically and justifiably right for me caused enough frustration for this song to come bouncing out of the dark, scary recesses of my mind in the middle of the night.

This was not just conservative people trying to get me to be conservative too.  The reference to city child going country style is about my “hippie” friends wanting me to become a hippie and move to the commune etc. They were at least as annoying as the straight people!  Most hippies that I knew in 1972 were back in the city and working toward fine, socially responsible careers by the time I returned from overseas in 1974.  Nothing wrong with that but I do wish people would leave each other alone and let us all find our own path.  Mine has been exciting, rewarding and wonderful despite the myriad of dire warnings of imminent doom and damnation I have received over the years.

Did somebody see, a different direction?
Did somebody make, a different connection?
Though it could be right, it can’t be right for me baby,
I’m only wastin’ my time!

Run, run city child all gone country style maybe?
Make, break any dream, you make better seem, like you’re crazy,
I’m only wastin’ my time, I’m only wastin’ my time.

And nobody knows, a single collection,
And nobody shows, a simple perfection,
And though it could be right, it can’t be right for me baby,
I’m only wastin’ my time!

Say, play any song, help you get along, could be?
Lose, choose, anyone, try to catch the sun like it should be,
I’m only wastin’ my time, I’m only wastin’ my time.

I wanna see you rockin’ till four in the morning,
Smilin’ out the good times like a priest to his calling,
Swimming seas of happiness the rest of your life, but
I’m only wasting my time.

Has anyone seen, a final conclusion?
Has anyone been, above the confusion?

Tick, tick time away, will tomorrow wait for you?
Try, die, you and I, do you wonder why it’s not all you?
I’m only wastin’ my time, I’m only wastin’ my time!
